League Competitions and Selection
New Forest Junior Athletic Club
TRACK & FIELD
NFJ compete in two track & field leagues throughout the summer season, catering for athletes of all ages from U11's (school year 4) and up.
Wessex Young Athletes League
Four Sunday meetings a year, between April and July
U11’s compete in Quad Kids; 75m sprint / 600m run / vortex throw / long jump
U13’s and up select events from sprint hurdles / 100m / 200m / 300m / 800m / 1500m / discus / shot / javelin / long jump / high jump / relays
Team selection for the Wessex Young Athletes League is based on an A-string and a B-string for each event. The club's best performer (typically based on Power of 10 results) in each event will be selected as A-string, and the second best performer will be selected as B-string. However, there are plenty of opportunities for non-scoring places on the team sheet. Typically anybody who wishes to take part in the Wessex League fixtures can get onto the team sheet, and we encourage everybody to take part, so look out for the team selection emails from the Team Manager.
Youth Development League
Four Saturday meetings a year (LAG U13/U15) or four Sunday meetings a year (UAG U17/U20) between April and July
U13’s select events from sprint hurdles / 75m / 150m / 800m / 1200m / shot / javelin / long jump / high jump / relays
U15’s and up select events from sprint hurdles / 100m / 200m / 300m / 800m / 1500m / discus / shot / javelin / hammer / long jump / high jump / pole vault / relays
In the YDL Lower Age Group, we are part of a combined team with Bournemouth AC. In the Upper Age Group, we combine with Bournemouth and Salisbury. Teams are selected with an A-string and B-string athlete for each event but note that the selection also includes athletes from the other clubs with whom we form composite teams. In the YDL there are far fewer non-scoring places on the team sheet than the Wessex League, so unfortunately not all athletes will make the team for YDL matches.
CROSS COUNTRY
NFJ compete in two cross country leagues throughout the winter season, catering for athletes of all ages from U11's (school year 4) and up.
Race distances vary depending upon the course, but are generally speaking around 2km for U11's, 3km for U13's and 4km for U15's.
There is no limit on the number of people who can represent the club in cross-country races in either the Hampshire League or Wessex League so there is no selection policy. Look out for emails from the team managers from September onwards.
Hampshire Cross Country League
Four Saturday meetings a year between, October and February
Wessex Cross Country League
Four Sunday meetings a year between, October and December
SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS
An indoor multi-event competition open to U11’s – U15’s, Sportshall provides an alternative (or additional) winter competition outlet to cross country, particularly for our younger athletes.
Hampshire Sportshall League
Four Sunday meetings a year, between October and March.
